What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts which is based upon the
understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning
nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the
spine to all parts of the body).
Nervous system
The nervous system of the human body is responsible for sending, receiving,
and processing nerve impulses throughout the body. All the organs and
muscles inside your body rely upon these nerve impulses to function.
It could be considered as the master control unit inside your body. Sense
organs provide the nervous system with information about the environment
by means of such senses as sight, hearing, smell, taste, tough, pressure,
and pain. Nerves are connected throughout the whole body to the brain.
They carry the information throughout the body in the form of electrochemical
signals called impulses. These impulses travel from the brain and spinal
cord to the nerves located throughout the body.
The spine
The spine is made up of 24 moveable vertebrae. Each vertebra has the
general shape of a ring. The rings are stacked one on top
of another forming a vertical tunnel.
The brain controls the whole body through the spinal cord. Every function
under the neck is controlled by the spinal cord, muscle function,
breathing, your heart, digestion, sense of touch and immune function,
are just a few things controlled by the spinal cord. That's why it's
important to keep your spine healthy.
Subluxations
The delicate spinal cord is suspended from the brain and extends down
through the tunnel formed by the vertebrae. At each vertebral level
there are openings called foramen. The nerve emerge in pairs, one to
the right and one to the left. There are thirty-one pairs of spinal
nerves. Each nerve controls a specific area of the body.
When the spinal column is in proper alignment, the nerves pass unimpeded
through the foramen. These vertebrae can become misaligned; causing what
is called a subluxation. A subluxation can be caused by several things
in life: accidents, poor posture, repetitive movements, sports injuries,
or poor work ergonomics. When a subluxation occurs, it puts pressure
on the spinal cord and the nerves coming out of it. When there is pressure
on these nerves it causes pain to that area, and possibly muscle spasm
and inflammation. Pressure on these nerves can also cut off nerve transmission
to vital organs inside the body.
